The Missouri Department of Mental Health, through its Division of Behavioral Health, is responsible by state law for substance use treatment and rehabilitation. It sets standards and certifies substance use treatment programs, including CSTAR programs.
Prescription monitoring
Missouri's prescription drug monitoring program is administered by the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs within the Department of Health and Senior Services. It tracks controlled substance prescriptions.
Public coverage for treatment
MO HealthNet, Missouri's Medicaid program run by the Department of Social Services, covers substance use disorder treatment across levels of care, including residential treatment under the state's federal 1115 waiver.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Missouri law (RSMo 195.205) protects a person who seeks emergency help for an overdose, and the person overdosing, from possession charges for small amounts of a controlled substance discovered because of the emergency.
Court-ordered treatment
Missouri RSMo Chapter 631 provides for involuntary detention of a substance abuser who is dangerous to self or others, starting with a 96-hour hold that any adult may apply for, followed by court-reviewed detention of up to 30 and then 90 days.

Prescription stimulants include amphetamines such as Adderall, Vyvanse and Dexedrine, and methylphenidate products such as Ritalin and Concerta. They are Schedule II controlled substances. Taken as prescribed they help many people with ADHD; misused, they can lead to dependence, sleep problems, anxiety and heart strain.
Treatment for stimulant addiction centers on behavioral approaches, with contingency management having some of the strongest evidence. Learn how stimulant addiction is treated.
Therapies that work for stimulant addiction
Contingency management gives small rewards for drug-free urine tests and has strong evidence for stimulant use disorder. The Matrix Model combines individual and group therapy, family education and relapse prevention in a structured outpatient schedule. Community reinforcement helps rebuild work, relationships and activities that compete with drug use.
The programs on this page report one or more of these approaches. Confirm the details with each program near Missouri.

Using your insurance
Before you call a program, have your insurance card ready and ask three things: is the program in network, does the level of care need prior authorization, and what will you owe after the deductible. Plans regulated by federal parity law cannot set stricter limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Our insurance guides walk through major carriers.
