Who oversees treatment
The Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), part of the Department of Human Services, is New Jersey's designated single state agency for substance use and mental health. Substance use treatment facilities are licensed by the Department of Health under N.J.A.C. 8:43K.
Prescription monitoring
The New Jersey Prescription Monitoring Program (NJPMP) is run by the Division of Consumer Affairs. It tracks controlled dangerous substances dispensed in outpatient settings, and licensed prescribers and pharmacists can check a patient's history.
Public coverage for treatment
New Jersey's Medicaid program is NJ FamilyCare, which covers most substance use treatment services for eligible people.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
New Jersey's Overdose Prevention Act (P.L. 2013, c.46) protects a person who calls for medical help during an overdose, and the overdose victim, from arrest and prosecution for certain drug possession and use offenses. It does not cover other crimes such as trafficking.
How the state treats gabapentin
New Jersey requires pharmacies to report every gabapentin transaction to the NJ Prescription Monitoring Program, the same way they report Schedule II-V controlled dangerous substances. The requirement comes from N.J.A.C. 13:45A-35.3.

Stimulant detoxWhat to know about prescription stimulants
Vyvanse, Ritalin and Concerta are sometimes seen as safer than Adderall, but all prescription stimulants carry a risk of misuse and addiction. Snorting or injecting pills, or taking far more than prescribed, raises the danger.
Stopping after heavy use brings a withdrawal period of fatigue, increased sleep, appetite changes and low mood. Our stimulant withdrawal guide explains what to expect.
What stimulant detox involves
The first week off stimulants is usually the hardest, with fatigue, hunger, poor concentration and low mood, followed by weeks of cravings that come and go. Detox programs keep you safe and comfortable and plan what comes next.

Insurance and cost
Federal parity rules generally require health plans that cover substance use treatment to cover it on terms comparable to other medical care. Your actual cost depends on your plan, deductible and the program's network status, so verify benefits first. Our insurance guides explain how major carriers handle prescription drug rehab.
