Who oversees treatment
The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) oversees licensing and regulatory compliance for substance use treatment providers in the state.
Prescription monitoring
Virginia's Prescription Monitoring Program is run by the Department of Health Professions. It is a statewide database of dispensed controlled substances that providers use to guide prescribing and dispensing decisions.
Public coverage for treatment
Virginia Medicaid, run by the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), covers substance use treatment through its Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS) benefit. ARTS includes community-based services, inpatient detox, and residential treatment.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Virginia Code 18.2-251.03 protects a person who in good faith seeks emergency medical help for an overdose, or gives aid to someone else, from arrest and prosecution for certain offenses such as simple possession. Conditions apply, such as staying at the scene until police respond.
How the state treats gabapentin
Virginia lists gabapentin among the central nervous system depressants in Schedule V of its Drug Control Act, so it is a controlled substance under state law (Va. Code § 54.1-3454).

Detox + mental healthStimulant programWhat to know about ketamine
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic and a Schedule III controlled substance. A related prescription nasal spray, esketamine, is approved for treatment-resistant depression and is given only in certified clinics. Outside medical settings, ketamine is misused for its dissociative effects.
Regular ketamine use can lead to cravings and compulsive use, and it can damage the bladder and urinary tract. There is no approved medication for ketamine addiction, so treatment relies on therapy and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. See our ketamine addiction guide.
What ketamine detox involves
Ketamine withdrawal is mainly psychological: anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, irritability and strong cravings. Detox programs that also treat mental health can manage these symptoms, keep you safe and begin therapy. Medical staff can also check for bladder and kidney problems.
Ask detox programs near Virginia how they continue care after the first days.

Using your insurance
Before you call a program, have your insurance card ready and ask three things: is the program in network, does the level of care need prior authorization, and what will you owe after the deductible. Plans regulated by federal parity law cannot set stricter limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Our insurance guides walk through major carriers.
