Who oversees treatment
The Division of Integrated Healthcare is Utah's substance abuse authority under state code, and it sets minimum standards for local substance abuse authorities.
Prescription monitoring
Utah's prescription drug monitoring program is the Controlled Substance Database, run by the Division of Professional Licensing in the Department of Commerce. It collects records of Schedule II-V controlled substances dispensed by pharmacies.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Utah has a Good Samaritan law that shields a person who calls 911 for an overdose from legal charges related to the overdose, provided they stay and cooperate with responders.
Court-ordered treatment
Utah code provides for court-ordered 'essential treatment' of an adult's substance use disorder, and lets a parent submit a minor to an approved treatment facility after a neutral fact-finder review (26B-5-204).
How the state treats gabapentin
Utah lists all gabapentin products as Schedule V controlled substances under the state Controlled Substances Act (Utah Code 58-37-4). Pharmacies also report gabapentin dispensing to Utah's Controlled Substance Database.

Detox + mental healthWhat to know about ketamine
Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic and a Schedule III controlled substance. A related prescription nasal spray, esketamine, is approved for treatment-resistant depression and is given only in certified clinics. Outside medical settings, ketamine is misused for its dissociative effects.
Regular ketamine use can lead to cravings and compulsive use, and it can damage the bladder and urinary tract. There is no approved medication for ketamine addiction, so treatment relies on therapy and care for co-occurring mental health conditions. See our ketamine addiction guide.
What ketamine detox involves
Ketamine withdrawal is mainly psychological: anxiety, low mood, poor sleep, irritability and strong cravings. Detox programs that also treat mental health can manage these symptoms, keep you safe and begin therapy. Medical staff can also check for bladder and kidney problems.
Ask detox programs near Utah how they continue care after the first days.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
