Who oversees treatment
The Governor has designated the Mississippi Department of Mental Health to administer the state's substance use block grant, and the department runs the public substance use disorder system. It certifies community alcohol and drug service providers rather than licensing them.
Prescription monitoring
Mississippi's Prescription Monitoring Program is operated by the state Board of Pharmacy. Pharmacies report controlled substances dispensed to patients, and the data is available to authorized users.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
The Mississippi Medical Emergency Good Samaritan Act (Miss. Code 41-29-149.1) protects a person who seeks help in good faith for a drug overdose from arrest or prosecution for certain low-level possession and paraphernalia offenses discovered because of the emergency.
Court-ordered treatment
Mississippi has a court process for alcohol and drug commitment. An interested person files an affidavit with the chancery court after a community mental health center screening, and the court may order inpatient or outpatient treatment.
How the state treats gabapentin
The Mississippi Board of Pharmacy has designated gabapentin a drug of concern, so every gabapentin prescription that is dispensed must be reported to the Mississippi Prescription Monitoring Program (MSPMP).

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What sleeping pill rehab looks like
Treatment for Ambien and other sleeping pill dependence usually combines a gradual taper with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, which teaches the brain to sleep without medication. Programs also treat the anxiety, depression or pain that often sit underneath sleep problems.
The programs on this page report psychiatric medication management. Ask each program near Mississippi how it handles tapering.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
