Who oversees treatment
The Department of Public Health's Bureau of Substance Addiction Services oversees the statewide system of substance use prevention, treatment and recovery services and licenses treatment programs.
Prescription monitoring
The Massachusetts Prescription Monitoring Program, accessed through the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool (MassPAT), is run under the Department of Public Health and lets authorized prescribers and pharmacists check Schedule II-V prescription histories.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Under M.G.L. c. 94C s. 34A, a person who has an overdose or seeks medical help for one in good faith cannot be charged or prosecuted for simple possession of a controlled substance based on evidence gained from that call. It does not cover trafficking or intent to distribute.
Court-ordered treatment
Massachusetts has Section 35 (M.G.L. c. 123 s. 35), which lets a court order a person with an alcohol or substance use disorder into inpatient treatment when use creates a likelihood of serious harm.
How the state treats gabapentin
Massachusetts requires pharmacies to submit every gabapentin dispensation to the state Prescription Monitoring Program, alongside Schedule II through V controlled substances. Gabapentin is tracked this way even though the reporting page lists it separately from the scheduled drugs.

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What sleeping pill rehab looks like
Sleeping pill rehab is less about willpower and more about rebuilding sleep. Expect a slow medication taper, sleep education, therapy and, in residential care, a consistent schedule that resets your body clock.
Tell the program about everything you take, including alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines, because combinations raise the risk.

Using your insurance
Before you call a program, have your insurance card ready and ask three things: is the program in network, does the level of care need prior authorization, and what will you owe after the deductible. Plans regulated by federal parity law cannot set stricter limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Our insurance guides walk through major carriers.
