Who oversees treatment
The Health Standards Section of the Louisiana Department of Health licenses behavioral health service providers, including substance use treatment programs.
Prescription monitoring
The Louisiana Prescription Monitoring Program is operated by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy under authority created by the Legislature in 2006. It tracks controlled substances dispensed in or into the state to help curb diversion.
Public coverage for treatment
Louisiana Medicaid, known to enrollees as Healthy Louisiana, covers medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders under its state plan.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Louisiana's overdose Good Samaritan law, La. R.S. 14:403.10, protects a person who acts in good faith to get help for an overdose from charges and prosecution for possessing a controlled substance.
Court-ordered treatment
Louisiana law (La. R.S. 28:53) allows emergency admission by certificate of a person with a substance-related or addictive disorder who is dangerous to self or others or gravely disabled, and longer stays require judicial commitment under R.S. 28:54.
How the state treats gabapentin
Louisiana does not schedule gabapentin as a controlled substance, but the Board of Pharmacy names it a drug of concern in its Prescription Monitoring Program rules (LAC 46:LIII, Section 2901). Pharmacies must therefore report gabapentin dispensing to the state PMP.

Sedative careStimulant detoxWhat to know about Ambien and sleeping pills
Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What sleeping pill rehab looks like
Sleeping pill rehab is less about willpower and more about rebuilding sleep. Expect a slow medication taper, sleep education, therapy and, in residential care, a consistent schedule that resets your body clock.
Tell the program about everything you take, including alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines, because combinations raise the risk.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
