Who oversees treatment
In Hawaii, the Department of Health's Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division accredits substance use treatment programs, while the department's Office of Health Care Assurance handles state licensing of special treatment facilities and therapeutic living programs.
Prescription monitoring
Hawaii's Prescription Drug Monitoring Program is operated by the Narcotics Enforcement Division of the Department of Law Enforcement and keeps a record of controlled-substance prescriptions that prescribers and pharmacies can use.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Hawaii law (added to Chapter 329 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes by Act 217 of 2015) protects a person who seeks medical help in good faith for a drug or alcohol overdose from arrest and prosecution for certain offenses such as drug possession.
Court-ordered treatment
Hawaii's civil commitment law in Chapter 334 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes allows court-ordered involuntary hospitalization for a person with mental illness or a substance abuse problem who is imminently dangerous, gravely disabled or obviously ill and has no suitable less restrictive option.

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What sleeping pill rehab looks like
Sleeping pill rehab is less about willpower and more about rebuilding sleep. Expect a slow medication taper, sleep education, therapy and, in residential care, a consistent schedule that resets your body clock.
Tell the program about everything you take, including alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines, because combinations raise the risk.

Using your insurance
Before you call a program, have your insurance card ready and ask three things: is the program in network, does the level of care need prior authorization, and what will you owe after the deductible. Plans regulated by federal parity law cannot set stricter limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Our insurance guides walk through major carriers.
