Who oversees treatment
The Behavioral Health Administration (BHA), part of the Colorado Department of Human Services, serves as the State Single Authority for substance abuse services and also oversees licensing and designation of behavioral health providers.
Prescription monitoring
The Colorado PDMP is run by the Division of Professions and Occupations within the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA); it is the state's system for tracking controlled substance prescriptions.
Public coverage for treatment
Colorado's Medicaid program is Health First Colorado, which covers substance use treatment across levels of care, including outpatient care, withdrawal management, residential treatment and medication-assisted treatment.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Colorado's 911 Good Samaritan statute gives immunity from arrest and prosecution for certain drug and alcohol possession offenses to a person who reports an overdose in good faith or helps the person in need, and to the person who overdosed, if they stay and cooperate with responders.
Court-ordered treatment
Colorado has a civil process under C.R.S. 27-81-111 and 27-81-112 with two stages: emergency commitment to a withdrawal management program, and court-ordered involuntary commitment to treatment as a last resort. The state page uses these formal terms rather than a common nickname.

Sedative careWhat to know about Ambien and sleeping pills
Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What sleeping pill rehab looks like
Treatment for Ambien and other sleeping pill dependence usually combines a gradual taper with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, which teaches the brain to sleep without medication. Programs also treat the anxiety, depression or pain that often sit underneath sleep problems.
The programs on this page report psychiatric medication management. Ask each program near Colorado how it handles tapering.

Using your insurance
Before you call a program, have your insurance card ready and ask three things: is the program in network, does the level of care need prior authorization, and what will you owe after the deductible. Plans regulated by federal parity law cannot set stricter limits on addiction care than on comparable medical care. Our insurance guides walk through major carriers.
