Who oversees treatment
New York's Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) certifies addiction treatment providers; a provider needs the OASAS Commissioner's approval before opening a facility or offering a new service.
Prescription monitoring
New York's prescription monitoring program is the PMP Registry (part of I-STOP, the Internet System for Tracking Over-Prescribing), run by the Department of Health's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement. It gives prescribers access to patients' dispensed controlled substance histories.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
New York's 911 Good Samaritan law (Penal Law 220.78) protects a person who seeks help in good faith for an overdose, and the person overdosing, from prosecution for certain drug and paraphernalia possession offenses. Sale for money is excluded.
Court-ordered treatment
New York's Mental Hygiene Law section 22.09 allows a person who is incapacitated by alcohol or substances and likely to harm themselves or others to be taken to a treatment facility and held involuntarily for emergency evaluation, for up to 72 hours.

Sleeping pill dependence often develops slowly: a nightly pill becomes two, or sleep feels impossible without it. Mixing sleeping pills with alcohol or opioids is especially dangerous because together they can slow breathing.
Treatment usually pairs a gradual taper with cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, which helps restore natural sleep. See our sleeping pill withdrawal guide.
What medically managed detox involves
Sedative withdrawal can range from a few bad nights to dangerous symptoms after heavy use. Medically managed detox keeps doctors and nurses on hand, uses a gradual taper, and treats anxiety and sleeplessness along the way.

Paying for treatment
Most private health insurance plans cover addiction treatment, including detox, residential care and outpatient programs, though what is covered depends on your plan and whether the program is in network. Many programs also offer sliding-scale fees or take self-pay. Ask about prior authorization before you go, and see our insurance guides.
