Who oversees treatment
The Minnesota Department of Human Services is the state agency that licenses substance use disorder treatment programs under Chapter 245G of state statute.
Prescription monitoring
The Minnesota Prescription Monitoring Program is administered by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. It is meant to detect diversion, abuse and misuse of prescribed controlled substances.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Minnesota's Good Samaritan statute protects a person who seeks medical help for an overdose, and the person who overdosed, from prosecution for certain drug possession offenses. It also bars revoking pretrial release, probation or parole based on a covered incident.
Court-ordered treatment
Minnesota's Civil Commitment Act (Chapter 253B) covers 'chemically dependent persons' and allows emergency holds and court commitment for those who cannot manage themselves and are a substantial risk of harm.
How the state treats gabapentin
Minnesota does not treat gabapentin as a controlled substance, but the Board of Pharmacy lists it as a 'drug of concern' whose dispensations must be reported to the Minnesota Prescription Monitoring Program. The board notes gabapentin is not controlled federally or in Minnesota and is tracked to watch for misuse.

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What medically managed detox involves
Sedative withdrawal can range from a few bad nights to dangerous symptoms after heavy use. Medically managed detox keeps doctors and nurses on hand, uses a gradual taper, and treats anxiety and sleeplessness along the way.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
