Who oversees treatment
Iowa Health and Human Services, through its Division of Behavioral Health, leads, funds and monitors statewide substance use efforts. The agency also licenses and monitors substance use disorder treatment programs under standards set in the Iowa Administrative Code.
Prescription monitoring
The Iowa Prescription Monitoring Program collects and stores data on controlled substance prescriptions so authorized prescribers and pharmacists can review a patient's history. It is run by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, part of the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing.
Public coverage for treatment
Iowa Medicaid is a major funder of behavioral health care in the state, and the managed care organizations it contracts with must provide mental health and substance use services.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Iowa Code section 124.418, titled for persons seeking medical assistance for a drug-related overdose, provides the state's overdose help-seeking protections under the controlled substances chapter.

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What medically managed detox involves
Sedative withdrawal can range from a few bad nights to dangerous symptoms after heavy use. Medically managed detox keeps doctors and nurses on hand, uses a gradual taper, and treats anxiety and sleeplessness along the way.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
