Who oversees treatment
The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) licenses Drug Abuse Treatment and Education Programs and Narcotic Treatment Programs, a duty that moved to it from the Department of Community Health. Its Office of Addictive Diseases also funds substance use treatment providers.
Prescription monitoring
The Georgia Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, run by the Georgia Department of Public Health, collects reports on dispensed controlled substance prescriptions to help reduce duplicative prescribing and overprescribing. Management of the program moved there from the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
Georgia's 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty law (O.C.G.A. 16-13-5) protects a person who in good faith seeks medical help for an overdose, for themselves or someone else, from arrest and prosecution for certain minor drug possession offenses when the evidence comes solely from seeking help. It also covers some probation, parole and protective order violations tied to those offenses.

Ambien (zolpidem), Lunesta (eszopiclone) and Sonata (zaleplon) are prescription sleep medications often called z-drugs. They are Schedule IV controlled substances. The FDA requires a boxed warning about complex sleep behaviors, such as sleep-walking and sleep-driving, which can cause serious injuries.
Long-term or high-dose use can lead to tolerance and dependence. Stopping suddenly can cause rebound insomnia and anxiety, so a gradual, supervised taper is safest. Read our Ambien addiction guide.
What medically managed detox involves
Hospital-based and medically managed detox programs can watch vital signs, adjust a taper and respond quickly if withdrawal becomes severe. That level of care matters most for people who have taken high doses for a long time or who also use alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines.
Ask detox programs near Georgia how long a typical stay lasts and what follow-up they arrange.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
