Who oversees treatment
In North Carolina, the Division of Health Service Regulation's Mental Health Licensure and Certification Section licenses mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse facilities. Substance use policy sits with the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services within NCDHHS.
Prescription monitoring
The NC Controlled Substances Reporting System collects data on dispensed controlled substance prescriptions and makes it available to prescribers and dispensers. It is hosted by NCDHHS under the North Carolina Drug Control Unit in the substance use services division.
Public coverage for treatment
North Carolina's Medicaid program, NC Medicaid, covers substance use disorder treatment such as intensive outpatient programs under its clinical coverage policies. Members in prepaid health plans should check with their plan about specific benefits.
Overdose Good Samaritan law
North Carolina's overdose Good Samaritan law, G.S. 90-96.2, protects a person who calls 911 or EMS for an overdose, and the overdose victim, from prosecution for certain minor drug offenses when conditions are met. It does not cover every offense.
Court-ordered treatment
North Carolina's involuntary commitment law for substance abuse, G.S. 122C-281, lets someone file a sworn affidavit with a clerk or magistrate asking for a person who is a dangerous substance abuser to be taken into custody for examination by a commitment examiner.
How the state treats gabapentin
Under G.S. 90-113.73(b), North Carolina requires dispensers to report gabapentin to the state Controlled Substances Reporting System, even though it is not a federally controlled drug.

Inpatient / residentialDual diagnosisWhat to know about Adderall
Adderall misuse often starts as a way to study, work longer hours or lose weight. Over time, tolerance builds, and stopping can bring a crash of fatigue, low mood and strong cravings.
Withdrawal from Adderall is not usually physically dangerous, but the depression that can follow is real, so support matters. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988. See signs of Adderall addiction.
What Adderall rehab looks like
Adderall rehab focuses on changing patterns of use rather than replacing the drug with a medication. Days in residential care combine individual therapy, groups, exercise, regular sleep and meals, which help the brain recover after heavy stimulant use. Outpatient programs deliver the same therapies while you live at home.
A good program also checks for ADHD, depression and anxiety, and works with a prescriber on how to manage ADHD symptoms safely after treatment near North Carolina.

Cost and coverage
The cost of treatment depends mostly on the level of care, how long you stay and your insurance. Residential care costs the most; outpatient therapy the least. Many programs on SAMHSA's directory accept private insurance, and some offer sliding-scale fees. See our insurance guides for details by carrier.
